ATTA ADJEI-STREET BOY

Dear Members of Our Global Community:

Atta Adjei is a young boy of 14 years old who lost his father at 5 years old. Instead of attending school, he has been selling ice cream in the market and sleeping on the streets of Nsawam, Ghana. The Youth Advocates Ghana organization helps children like Ata, as well as other
children who are young victims of domestic violence, sexual abuse and homelessness, so that they may return to school to get the education that they need to pull themselves out of poverty and become more positive and influential members of their communities.

WHY EDUCATION?

Why Education?
In Ghana, as in virtually all African countries, education has proven the single best route out of poverty for the vast majority of the population. Education forms the critical foundation for access to decent-paying jobs in Ghana. Without education, children are virtually condemned to an adult life of intense poverty and drudgery, and have a significantly reduced ability to control the direction of their lives. Unfortunately in Ghana, the right to, and the opportunity for, education is not open to all. Many children are denied a education and the prospect for a brighter future simply on the basis of the needs and choices of their families. As a consequence of the poverty faced by
the majority in Ghana, too many children especially in rural areas cannot secure a full, basic education and are robbed of their potential not only to learn, but to excel.

Although basic education is in principle free in Ghana, the cost of uniforms, shoes and exercise books is still a huge expense for many rural families. Although there is a policy that uniforms are not compulsory, in practice, teachers put a lot of pressure on pupils to acquire them, and those who don’t have them are stigmatized. Many pupils drop out for this reason. Shoes are a significant expense in areas where people wear mainly flip-flops or nothing at all. In addition to this, the cost of purchasing exercise books for each subject along with other necessary stationery is a significant additional cost.

By offering merit based scholarships and bursaries that are based on need; we are able to provide direct and material encouragement to students who without the assistance, would be actively thwarted by the material pressures they must overcome at the same time as they are trying to focus and deepen their understanding of their subjects and take their insights to new heights.

By funding their education we free them from the burden of school fees. Our programs help the children by funding the basic necessities of academic success:
• School P.T.A Fees
• School Uniforms
• Shoes and Bags
• Pens & Pencils
• Lunch

We strongly believe that by directly funding the education of needy children we help them realize their hope of a full basic and secondary education, and the bigger dream of achieving lifelong success through academic excellence!
